Well, believe it or not, when I was a kid I didn’t always know it when I was afraid! ...I went

to a co-counselling workshop in 1996 run by a woman called Margot. The workshop was called ‘Fear’. I think I only went along because I had a spare afternoon, so I wasn’t really expecting much to happen for me. My main pre-occupations were my lack of confidence, my embarrassment about getting intimate with people, my tendency to be spiky or impatient with people who pissed me off, my… (Well, I won’t go through the whole list here.) The thing is, I didn’t really think I had much fear.

During the workshop I revisited a situation from the past where I felt very helpless and frightened. I hadn’t realised that all those feelings were there. It’s been really useful ever since, as I now know that when I hold back from something there is a chance that it’s because of fear rather than a limitation in my abilities. I now know that I have to investigate these possibilities.

Of course, that’s me. Some people are all too well acquainted with their own fear. In that case, co-counselling can help sort out where the fear needs to be placed. E.g. Am I afraid of my boss, or is that his/her tone of voice just sends straight back to that time when I was sitting outside the head teacher’s study waiting for a telling off?

My course will give you the space to sort through any fears that you feel, at the pace that you choose. It may, as in my, case, give you the space to discover some fears that you didn’t know you had. Is that useful to you? You decide!
