  MAD, BAD, SAD and GLAD

This is a shorthand way of thinking about categories of emotions. It's a bit simplistic, but I still think it's quite a good way of starting to think about what sorts of emotions we all have.

Have a look at the table below...

MAD

BAD

SAD

GLAD

  • Angry (including enraged, mildly irritated, annoyed, cross)
  • Insanity
  • Shame (including embarrassment)
  • Guilt
  • Envy
  • Fear
  • Anxious / nervous
  • Disappointed
  • Grief-stricken (feeling a loss)
  • Bereft
  • Joyful
  • Ecstatic
  • Happy
  • Proud
  • Content

Note:

  • Depression is not an emotion.  Depression can be a state of absence of feeling, therefore if one is depressed it would be an achievement - and a step in the right direction - to feel sad or angry.
  • Some people say they are ‘disappointed’ in order to avoid admitting they are ‘angry’.
  • Think about how are you express physically these emotions
